Stream UF at CasaGrand Chennai: Water Reuse Case

Updated: 6 days ago

Introduction

Rapid urban development and increasing water scarcity have made efficient water reuse systems essential in large residential communities. Treated sewage water, when properly polished, can be safely reused for non-potable applications such as landscaping, flushing, and utility services, significantly reducing dependence on freshwater sources.

At CasaGrand, Chennai, a premium residential development, treated water from the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) required advanced polishing to ensure consistent quality and operational reliability. To meet these requirements, CasaGrand partnered with Theway Membranes to implement Stream Ultrafiltration (UF) Membranes. This case study highlights the long-term performance and durability of Stream UF membranes in a residential water reuse application.

The Challenge

Although STP-treated water meets basic treatment requirements, it often contains residual turbidity, suspended solids, colloidal silica, and organic matter that can impact downstream systems and reuse quality. At CasaGrand, Chennai, the following challenges were identified:

  • Residual Turbidity & Suspended Solids: STP-treated water showed turbidity levels up to 25 NTU with TSS up to 20 ppm.

  • Colloidal Silica Presence: Fine colloidal particles posed a risk to reuse systems and storage infrastructure.

  • Organic Load (BOD & COD): Residual organics increased fouling potential in filtration systems.

  • Operational Reliability: The residential complex required uninterrupted operation with minimal maintenance.

  • Long-Term Cost Control: Extended membrane life without frequent replacement was a key requirement.

The project required a robust UF polishing system capable of handling variable STP effluent quality while consistently delivering high-quality permeate for residential reuse.

The Solution: Stream Ultrafiltration Membranes

After detailed technical evaluation, Stream UF Membranes from Theway Membranes were selected for their proven performance in polishing treated wastewater for reuse applications.

Key Features of Stream UF Membranes

  • Advanced Ultrafiltration Technology: Efficient removal of suspended solids, colloidal silica, and residual organic matter.

  • Consistent Permeate Quality: Delivers low-turbidity, high-clarity water suitable for residential reuse.

  • High Fouling Resistance: Designed to operate reliably with variable STP-treated water quality.

  • Long Membrane Life: Demonstrated durability over extended operating periods.

  • Low Maintenance Operation: Reduced cleaning frequency and simplified operation.

Deployment at Cheyyar Cooperative Sugar Mill

The Stream UF system was commissioned in 2022 as a polishing step for STP-treated water, ensuring reliable water quality for reuse within the residential complex. The system operates at a capacity of 10 m³/hr, supporting the daily water requirements of the community.

Key Deployment Details

  • Location: CasaGrand, Chennai

  • Industry Segment: Residential Water Reuse

  • Technology: Stream – Ultrafiltration

  • Source Water: STP Treated Water

  • User Application: STP Polishing / Reuse

  • Capacity: 10 m³/hr

  • Commissioning: 2022

Results and Impact

Field validation of Stream UF Membranes at CasaGrand, Chennai demonstrated consistent performance and long-term operational stability.

Key Results Achieved

  • Consistent Permeate Quality:

    • Turbidity: < 1 NTU

    • Suspended Solids: < 1 ppm

    • SDI: < 6Achieved consistently over 48 months, even with feed turbidity up to 25 NTU, TSS up to 20 ppm, and SDI < 6.

  • Long-Term Operational Reliability:Stream UF membranes have been operating reliably for over four years, with no membrane replacement required as of August 2025.

  • Improved Water Reuse Quality:High-quality UF permeate ensured safe and consistent water reuse for landscaping, flushing, and utility applications.

  • Minimal Maintenance & Downtime:High fouling resistance reduced cleaning frequency and ensured uninterrupted system operation.

  • Cost Savings:Extended membrane life and reduced maintenance requirements delivered long-term operational cost benefits.

Conclusion

The successful deployment of Stream Ultrafiltration Membranes at CasaGrand, Chennai demonstrates the effectiveness of Theway Membranes’ UF technology in residential water reuse applications. The system consistently polished STP-treated water to high quality standards, supported sustainable water management, and operated reliably over several years without membrane replacement.

By adopting Stream UF membranes, CasaGrand achieved improved water reuse quality, reduced freshwater dependency, and long-term operational efficiency. This case study highlights the value of robust ultrafiltration solutions in supporting sustainable residential water infrastructure.
