Introduction
Thermal power plants require a continuous supply of high-quality water for boiler feed preparation and auxiliary processes. River water, a commonly used source, often carries high turbidity, suspended solids, colloidal silica, and organic matter, which can adversely affect downstream RO and DM plant systems if not properly treated.
At Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL), Rajasthan, maintaining consistent pretreatment performance was critical to ensure reliable RO operation and long membrane life. To address these challenges, RRVUNL partnered with Theway Membranes to implement TW-Septa 400-1530 membranes as pretreatment to RO. This case study highlights the durability and consistent performance of TW-Septa membranes under challenging river water conditions.

The Challenge
The river water source at RRVUNL presented multiple operational challenges due to fluctuating quality and fine contaminants:
High Turbidity & Suspended Solids: Feed water turbidity reached up to 25 NTU, with TSS up to 20 ppm, increasing fouling risk.
Colloidal Silica Presence: Fine colloidal particles posed a threat to RO membrane performance.
Organic Matter: Organics increased SDI values and operational stress on pretreatment systems.
RO Protection Requirement: Stable low turbidity and SDI were essential for reliable DM plant operation.
Operational Cost Control: Avoiding frequent membrane replacement and excessive cleaning was a key requirement.
The plant required a robust, high-capacity pretreatment solution capable of handling variable river water quality while delivering consistent permeate.
The Solution: TW-Septa 400-1530
After technical evaluation, TW-Septa 400-1530 membranes from Theway Membranes were selected for their proven efficiency and durability in thermal power plant pretreatment applications.
Key Features of TW-Septa 400-1530
Advanced Membrane Filtration Technology: Effective removal of suspended solids, colloidal silica, and organic matter.
Consistently Low Turbidity Permeate: Produces high-quality water suitable for RO pretreatment.
High Fouling Resistance: Designed to perform reliably under varying river water conditions.
Robust & Durable Design: Engineered for continuous operation in large thermal power plants.
Low Maintenance Requirement: Reduced cleaning frequency and extended membrane service life.
Deployment at RRVUNL, Rajasthan
The TW-Septa 400-1530 system was commissioned in 2025 at the RRVUNL thermal power plant as pretreatment to RO in the DM plant. The system treats river water with an installed capacity of approximately 5.0 MLD, ensuring stable water supply for power generation.
