What Is an Ultrafiltration Membrane? | UF Guide

Updated: Apr 11

Ultrafiltration is a pressure-driven membrane based separation process to remove suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, endotoxins and other pathogens to produce water with very high purity and low silt density.

Membranes used to achieve this level of fine separation are called ultrafiltration membranes. UF membranes generally have a pore size range between 0.1-0.01 Microns.

The most popular materials that UF membranes are made out of are PVDF and PES, both equally potent and functional materials.

An ultrafiltration membrane rejection chart is shown below. This elucidates what can pass through an ultrafiltration membrane and what cannot.

UF membranes are able to remove >99% suspended solids, bacteria and viruses in feed water. They also render feed water turbid free in the permeate. UF permeate water can be used for non potable applications.
