TheWay NF-4040 Nanofiltration Membrane Technical Datasheet

The TheWay NF-4040 is a 4-inch spiral wound nanofiltration membrane element designed for selective ion removal, water softening, color and organic removal, and partial desalination applications. Nanofiltration operates between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis, selectively rejecting divalent ions (calcium, magnesium, sulfate) while allowing monovalent ions (sodium, chloride) to partially pass through. This makes NF ideal for applications where full desalination is unnecessary or undesirable.

The NF-4040 is ideal for water softening without chemicals (removing hardness ions Ca2+ and Mg2+), color and NOM (natural organic matter) removal from surface water, selective demineralization where some mineral content is desired in the permeate, pesticide and micropollutant removal from drinking water sources, sugar and dairy concentration in food processing, and pre-treatment for high-purity industrial processes. Operating at lower pressures than RO (typically 5–8 bar for softening applications), the NF-4040 offers significant energy savings when full desalination is not required.

Storage and Handling

Elements ship wet in 1% SMBS preservative in sealed bags. Store at 5–35°C; never freeze. Use within 12 months. Flush preservative before installation with RO-quality water. For shutdowns > 48 hours, re-preserve with 0.5% SMBS at pH 3–6. Handle horizontally; protect end caps and brine seals from impact.

Q: What is the difference between NF and RO?

A: NF selectively rejects divalent ions (> 97%) while allowing 40–60% of monovalent ions to pass. RO rejects > 99% of all dissolved salts. NF operates at lower pressures (3.5–14 bar vs. 10–41 bar for RO), resulting in lower energy consumption.

Q: Can the NF-4040 replace a water softener?

A: Yes. The NF-4040 removes > 97% of hardness ions without salt regeneration, making it an excellent chemical-free alternative to ion exchange softeners for many applications.
