Water Hammer in UF Membranes Part 2: Solutions

During switch ON and switch OFF of the Centrifugal pumps, there is always an instantaneous rise in the pressure in piping as well as pressure applied on the membrane fibers. By the use of VFD’s we are able to control the sudden rises in pressure that occur during ON and OFF of these pumps by slowly ramping up and slowly ramping down the motor’s speed of rotation by controlling the frequency of the AC current given to this motors. By controlling motor’s speed we are eliminating sudden spikes in pressure thereby protecting the piping, the valves and importantly protecting the membrane. Use of VFD is good engineering practice in all Ultrafiltration plants because most Ultrafiltration membranes have polymeric hollow fibers which are not supposed to be exposed to sudden spikes in pressure.
